Cryptid Fragments

This collection of electroacoustic music presents compositions realized between 1991 and 1996 using the computer to effect a variety of strategies for sonic manipulation. These pieces were first released as the fourth volume in the zOaR Portal Series of limited-editions.

E# was one of the pioneers of realtime use of the computer in improvising performance with his Virtual Stance project in 1986 using the Atari ST. Switching to a Macintosh IIx computer in 1991, he began creating pieces solely for the recorded medium. Cryptid Fragments, from the long out-of-print eponymous album, was first issued by the Extreme label from Australia in 1994 and used as source material an extensive table of composed gestures performed by cellist Maggie Parkins and violinist Sara Parkins and represents over 150 hours of editing and processing work, using approaches similar to the "musique concrete" techniques of the 1950's and 1960's.
