The Definitive Collection

The Definitive Collection

There have been numerous Roy Buchanan collections to hit the streets since the guitarist committed suicide in 1988. There have been no less than four issued by Universal, with just enough of the same material to be irritating. Definitive Collection is no exception. There isn't anything here that's unreleased. Some of these items have been hard to get hold of for a little while, such as the closing read of "Hey Joe," which originally appeared on an album called Live in Japan from 1978 and was collected on the double-disc Sweet Dreams anthology in 1992. The best thing here is the reading of Neil Young's "Down by the River," which has been out of print since Sweet Dreams left the shelves in the mid-'90s. "Baltimore" is here from the unreleased first album "The Prophet" (with Charlie Daniels) - and from the sound of this cut, it seems that album was better off left that way - Buchanan hated it. Fans will be familiar with all of the material here, and those considering being introduced to Buchanan could very well start here, or with any of the other Universal collections since they're all full of both classics and filler. - allmusic.com
