The group "Collage" was founded in 1966 ; it was composed of students from Tallinn music conservatory in Estonia grouped around Raivo Dikson. The name was given by Anne Erm, one of the original voices . Why "Collage"? That's precisely the band’s originality. They didn't want to be only a vocal jazz band, or a folk band, or a classical band,but a broadest combination of all those influences. 44 years later, this approach seems really modern. What's modern Pop today? Most of innovative bands today have this hybrid-crossover vision of music. That’s why Collage’s music is very impressive and instructive. Inspired by folk Estonian tradition (Estonian Television commissioned five Estonian folk songs in their first record) and more precisely by the work of Swedish pianist and composer Jan Johansson (1931/1968) and also Veljo Tormis’s work, they were also into jazzed-up pop music like Michel Legrand, Antonio Carlos Jobim with a very personal vision of vocal arrangement. Wool recordings formely released in 2004 a EP of Collage and today we're happy to present a larger selection of Collage work taken from the very rare original records. Collage has a wonderful approach of musicality, mixing traditional Estonian folk music, Jazz but also classical music without any restrictive borders...It is definitively subtle, and never falls into the cheesy "easy listening" thing. It's now time to give this radiant and sensitive band Collage the success it really deserves, and lets it be discovered not only by Jazz fans or Djs "diggin the perfect break" but also by pop music fans, as it recalls through the decades more actual bands like Stereolab, Belle and Sebastian, High llamas, Flaming lips ...
