Don Thomas grew up in the Southeastern part of Texas about 100 miles from Houston. He loved the music of the 50's and 60's and would sometimes go to sleep with his phonograph playing albums of Elvis Presley, Johnny Mathis, Frank Sinatra and other artists from that time period. Although he had a great appreciation for the vocal talents in popular music he never tried to sing until much later in life. He was already a grandfather, thanks to his daughter, and it was the day his son was to be married. As he listened to the plans for the reception, he was surprised to hear that his son was going to sing a song to his new bride. His son had never sang before he went off to college and Don was astonished to hear him play his guitar and sing a beautiful song, for which he had written the music and lyric. Don said at the time, “I didn’t know you could just learn to sing. I thought you had to be born with the gift.” Soon after the wedding he made a decision to do whatever it took to become an accomplished vocalist.
