The second volume of the Mbirafon “Blues At Home” Collection, this CD features a well-known and appreciated blues rediscovery of the '60s. The son of a fiddler and ex-slave, Sam Chatmon was born in Bolton, Mississippi, in 1899 and belonged to a large family of Mississippi Delta musicians. His brother Bo Chatmon (a.k.a. Bo Carter) made numerous records in the '30s. Before World War II, the Chatmon brothers and their associate Walter Vincent founded the string band called The Mississippi Sheiks, which became very popular playing for both white and black audiences. Among the titles they recorded, “Sitting on Top of the World” and “Stop and Listen” became blues standards. Starting to play music at the early age of five, Sam developed a complex guitar technique, coupled with a highly expressive vocal style. His huge repertoire encompasses pre-blues influences, ragtime, popular songs, and spirited renditions of blues hits of the '50s and '60s, as well as his own original compositions.
