Remembering O. V.
Johnny Rawls was O. V. Wright's music director when Johnny was still in his 20s. He was riding to a show with O.V. driving O. V.'s Cadillac when the great singer suffered his fatal heart attack in 1980. Johnny kept the band together backing and opening for Little Johnny Taylor and others for several years before embarking on his own solo career. He is joined by Blues Hall of Fame member Otis Clay on three songs. Otis and O. V. recorded on the same Hi Records label in Memphis and performed at several big shows together with Johnny as O. V.'s bandleader at many of the shows. Johnny Rawls has been nominated for 9 Blues Music Awards in the past 5 years and won Living Blues Critics' Choice Southern Soul Album of the Year 3 times. The project was suggested by Bill Wax, program director of Sirius-XM's B.B. King's Bluesville channel. This is classic soul with the two top living soulmen performing the music of the man many consider the greatest soul singer of all time. The studio band is Rawls' stellar group, The Rays, and once again he has called on the Iveys to do the background vocals. Mixed by multiple Grammy winner Jim Gaines and mastered by 2012 Grammy winning engineer Brad Blackwood.
