February
February: like the mix tape your high school sweetheart made for you in 1985.
The songs on Craving’s latest release, February, are as diverse as the band’s stack of influences. With songs that give a nod to R.E.M.’s Georgia twang, hearken back to U2’s early Dublin days, and incorporate New Order’s electronic/organic hybrid, February stands as a contemporary representation of the resurgence of the 80’s postpunk sound.
Brian Scanlon’s melodic crooning juxtaposes sweetly against a driving rhythm section and dark ambient guitar leads, while his vocal harmonies bolster February’s
hook-laden choruses.
The band’s sound is both appealing and understated, and is constructed from layers of subtle textures ranging from tambourine to full out electronica. From the jangling mandolin in Salmon Falls, to the epic strings in Change,
Craving’s February comes across like the mix tape your high school sweetheart made for you in 1985.
