About Pir Zia Inayat-Khan (Narrator)
Pir Zia Inayat-Khan, Ph.D., is a scholar and teacher in the Sufi lineage of his grandfather, Hazrat Inayat Khan. As the leader of the Sufi Order International, Pir Zia guides Sufi communities in North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and the South Pacific. Pir Zia is founder of Seven Pillars House of Wisdom, and also of Sulūk Academy, a school of contemplative study with branches in the United States and Europe. About Kane Mathis (Music)
Kane Mathis began his musical career at age sixteen, playing at blues and jazz clubs in Chicago and performing with legends like Barrelhouse Chuck and Harmonica Todd. He spent five years performing at festivals and roadhouses before attending The Lawrence Conservatory to study Jazz and classical guitar. He holds a diploma from The Tiramang Traditional music school in the Gambia and he has performed for the President of the Gambia, the American Ambassador to the Gambia, and he has appeared on Gambian National Radio and Television. He is a Chamber Music America grant recipient and an Earshot Jazz Album of the Year winner. Kane is also one of the leading interpreters of Ottoman classical music, having studied with Mutlu Torun of Istanbul’s I.T.U. conservatory before beginning a five-year apprenticeship with oud virtuoso Münir Nurettin Beken. As a composer, Kane is regularly commissioned to create original works for dance, theater, media, and instrumental ensembles. Kane’s new works are created for live performance and fixed media, and merge his classical experience with African and Middle Eastern music with new forms, electronic media and synthesis. www.kanemathis.com
About Bisan Toron (Vocals)
Bisan Toron is an experimental world music vocalist and voice teacher. Born in Syria and raised in Paris and New York, Bisan studied classical voice performance at NYU and holds a masters degree in Ethnomusicology from the University of London, School of Oriental and African Studies. She did further studies in voice and improvisation with the Roy Hart-based company, Pantheatre in France. Her music is informed by a multitude of cultures and vocal traditions, which she threads with vocal articulations that arise from the moment. Her debut CD, ‘Backstage Reveries, Voice Sketches by Bisan Toron,’ was released in 2008 and her second album, ‘Toward the Roar,’ is due for release in Fall 2014. Bisan was voice professor at ESADIB, National College of Dramatic Arts in Mallorca, Spain from 2008-2010 and has since been performing and teaching voice independently across Europe and the United States. He has a long background in film, publishing, and other media, and has worked on Oscar-winning films, published national bestselling and award-winning books, and directed a leading environmental magazine.
