The original songs on this CD were written over a long period of time which explains some of the changes in style, ranging from simple straight forward lyrics on “Forever by My Side,” to more symbolic lyrics on “Stay” or “Play the Castanets for Me.” On the later, I tried to achieve something like Dylan’s “Highway 61,” where ordinary descriptions act as metaphors for something more.
The songs are acoustic oriented, with the inclusion of drums on only two tracks. The lyrical content is mostly Christian themed, ranging from ideas about Christ’s sustenance on “Over and Over,” to the urgent pleadings of “Stay,” to faith through suffering on “Sunshine in My Mind.”
The cover version of “Come Thou Fount” represents some of the most thoughtful lyrics in the Protestant tradition for that time period.
